Bjork - Hope (Feliz Plastico Re-edit) - Free Download

artworks-000001633789-917an6-crop

Anyone who’s paid the slightest bit of attention to to what we do will know we are massive fans of Bjork at MBHQ. She’s da best and that’s all there is to say on the matter. As we anticipate her forthcoming album with baited breath and sweaty palms, we can keep a lid on such nervous anticipation by treating you to this tasty little re-edit of her classic ‘Hope’ from her last album Volta. Courtesy of an exciting and mysterious young producer from Glasgow known as Feliz Plastico, it takes the original and brings some snap and pop to it with tough drums and a solid groove aimed squarely at the dance floor. It’s been tearing up the floor at our weekly shindig in Glasgow so we felt it only right that we shared it with you lot.

While you’re at it, check out Feliz Plastico’s debut EP for 3rd Abstract Records. His ‘Nature’ EP was recently released and has been causing a stir amongst the house and techno heads among us. Check it out and get yourself a copy on the double.

Joe Driscoll - Mixtape Champs (Mr Benn’s Nod To The Creator Remix)

MBENN REMIX

Our man Mr Benn recently recorded a tip top remix of Joe Driscoll’s excellent Mixtape Champs track, and it’s being given away free as part of a free remix campaign so get your ears round this.

Joe Driscoll is posting two remixes of the title track from his new album ‘Mixtape Champs’ for free download every Tuesday up through June at www.joedriscoll.net. His new album will be released May 23rd on Localization Records, just in time for the summer festival season with remixes from Skitz, Mr. Benn, Tom Caruana, Eddie Rankin of Gentleman’s Dub Club, Jon Kennedy, and Don Hendicutz. Currently on tour in the U.K., he will be appearing at many of the finest festival stages through the summer: Glastonbury, Secret Garden, Shambala, Beatherder, Sunrise, and GreenMan to name just a few.

Driscoll, an innovator of live looping, creates the soundscape of a live band utilizing beatbox loops and multi-instrumental grooves. He was a pivotal part of the One Taste collective  whose alumni include Jamie Woon, Little Dragon, and Portico Quartet. He has collaborated with artists like Arrested Development, Rodney P & Skitz, and dancehall legend Spragga Benz.

The first remixes are from our very own Mr. Benn, adding his signature summery reggae hip-hop flavors, and Don Hendicutz taking it back to the old school with his aptly titled ‘93 remix. Get some.

Point To C is many things to many men. To us he means the most though. Not only is he our consistently brilliant chief designer, responsible for our flyers and general visual aesthetic, he’s also one of our crack team of resident DJs, spinning his unique mix of glacial beats, hip hop heavyweights, techno sound scapes and generally tasteful yet most dance worthy selection of quality music. He is also the man behind the always-on-point Grampian Mountains blog, which he uses to showcase his seemingly endless creative endeavours as well as share his musings with the world at large.

Check out this article on 5 of his favourite DJ mixes and what they mean to him. Covering the likes of Rob Hall, Andy Votel, Hexstatic and Autechre, it’s a worth while read and we can think of few better ways to spend 15 minutes of your time before spending the rest of your life tracking down the mixes in question….

Exclusive DJ Zinc Mix & Interview

mixed-bizness-podcast-digital-artwork_-podcast-0031

DJ Zinc is a legend living among mere mortals. He’s been a massive inspiration to us for as long as we can remember and we have nothing but love and respect for the man. Back in October 2008 we were honoured to host DJ Zinc for his first ever house set as he made the transition from being a drum & bass and jungle don to the leader of the new school of crunked up 4/4 beats and cracked out house riddims. Since then we’ve welcomed him back with open arms whenever possible and we are lucky enough to be hosting him in Glasgow this Friday, 11th March.

In anticipation of his set at the 2nd of the 4 closing parties we are hosting for Glasgow School of Art he has not only taken the time to grant us a quick catch up but also recorded an exclusive DJ mix to share with you all. Unsurprisingly it’s the best thing we’ve heard in a minute so get up in it…

Unfortunately for the trainspotters amongst us there is no track listing. The man himself tells us ‘One man’s tracklisting is another man’s shopping list’. Best dig out your own treats then…

Exclusive DJ Zinc Mixed Bizness Podcast (Direct Link To MP3)

Hows it going?

Fantastic thanks

What’ve you been up to?
Just finished mixing Katy B’s album, so starting on a few new tracks for my next release

What’s your production setup like?
Loads of analogue, but lots of new software too - I try and use the best of both worlds

Explain your beatmaking process?
I do a lot of sketches on my laptop on planes and trains, then take the basic ideas and make them more detailed and smooth in my studio

You made the leap from drum & bass and jungle to a more electro house sound. Do you ever see yourself making the switch back?
Lately I’ve been playing some jungle in my sets, and the long term plan was to be more of a ‘any genre’ DJ, but i had to have a few years with strictly no drum & bass in order to make a clean break. I can’t see myself ever playing up front dnb again, I really prefer the old jungle to new dnb.

What was the reaction like when you played people your ‘new’ stuff?
Weird at first, because people expected dnb and so were a bit puzzled. but after about a year people seem much more interested in the new stuff. My diary is busier then ever, and I’m having lots of fun!

People like Clipz (Redlight) have  made a similar switch in sound. Do you think other producers  are gonna be inspired to think outside their own comfort zones?
Hopefully - I love it when you get a dubstep person making house etc - brings different flavours to the table!

You worked with Ms Dynamite on Wile Out, Is there any other vocalists you’d like to work with? Why?
I’d like to work more with Ms Dyna, and Mr Dyna : ) - also working on Katy B’s album was a pleasure, so I’d like to work more with her. Newer people are P Money and Jamie George

Do you make a beat with a vocalist in mind or does it happen more naturally than that?
I just make beats then I let the vocalist decide what they like

You’re back in Glasgow again playing the Art School this Friday. for anyone who hasn’t seen you before what can they expect?
Bass heavy house, probably some jungle. hopefully quite well put together!

What music are you feeling at the moment?
This house thing seems to be getting more interesting by the day, Redlight’s stuff is getting  more attention. I like dubstep but I don’t play any generally

What would you be doing if you weren’t a musician?
Mid level office clerk. maybe middle management if I was lucky.

In your opinion, how has dance music, and the music industry generally changed since you started out?
Wow. I could talk about that crap for days. studio wise, when i started you had to go to a studio and use an engineer to make a tune, then I saved up and bought basic equipment, its was a slow complicated process, so the computer revolution means its much easier to make tunes, and people from poorer backgrounds have a much better chance. The downside is that when I started, because most tracks were made using a engineer, everything sounded pretty good, nowadays there’s so much crap music about.

Re vinyl going, then CDs going - overall I really like the way its gone. It’s speeded things up, made it a much more level playing field. Again, there are downsides, but  i think its 90% good. I like the idea of music sharing, treating music as an art or a gift, not a commodity. The way the industry has gone lots of arseholes have lost jobs at majors etc, and good riddance I say. i could talk about this stuff for days…

Favourite place you’ve ever played?
I love playing in Tokyo, such a great place to be. Brazil was good fun. I dunno, there have been so many great gigs…

Have you got any projects in the pipeline?
Working on a new solo project, probably an album.
