Memory9 a.k.a. Gadi Sassoon is a Milan’s “prodigious bleep-freak”, who combines a virtuosic control of live electronics with organic musicianship to create truly intriguing music, influenced by an array of diverse sounds, from Modeselektor, Aphex Twin and Squarepusher to jazz and punk rock.
A largely self-taught musician, he started performing at the age of 15 in the Italian underground, and shortly after achieved a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music on the grounds of his outstanding talent. He then moved to the USA for two years to immerse himself in jazz and electronic music. The years that followed were spent performing many memorable shows across North America and Europe, eventually landing him in London, where he started playing regularly at clubs and festivals. A residency with renowned promoters Soundcrash established his reputation as a high-calibre performer through his unique setups – from solo work with peculiar machines and homemade software to a full live setup with two drum kits, live electronics and guitar.
Having returned to his native Milan to focus on composition and production, Memory9 released the first single since his debut EP. The single, ‘Crash’, was written in San Francisco in the summer of 2009, while Memory9 was on tour. Partly inspired by JG Ballard’s novel of the same name and partly by the artist’s personal experience of a high-speed car crash, the track itself is an exploration of delicate textures, intricate drum programming and lush vocal melodies.
The follow up release, “Mission” featuring Juakali, recently released on burgeoning UK label Skanky Panky Records, stirred international attention and raised awareness for an artist who has so far been completely underground and devoted most of his time performing on stage. A truly incredible remix for DJ Vadim’s latest project The Electric continued to push the Memory 9 name to the forefront of today’s ever expanding electronic music scene. 2011 will see for the first time the release of a huge volume of Memory9 studio work, but will also be a year full of touring and festival appearances.
